<I recently entered a poetry competition, where you had to write a poem entitled 'Homecoming'. I did not win. This is my entry.>
The gate opens just like I remember,
With a short, sharp wail.
I walk across the vast sea of grass,
That once stained so many of my clothes,
Passing secret hiding places
And trees that still beg to be climbed.
Goldfish play in the shimmering pond,
Descendents of the fairground prizes
That enraptured me year after year,
Until the next excitement stole my attention.
Inside I wipe my feet, like a good boy,
On a welcome mat caked in ancient dirt.
The old kitchen table proudly displays
The scars of culinary enthusiasm
And childhood mischief.
In the safety of the living room,
The scent of wood fires and wet dogs
Still clings to the furniture,
As sunlight glistens on ornaments,
That are not to be played with.
The stairs creak to announce my approach,
To the sanctuary of my youth.
Teenage posters hide the crayon marks
Of infantile vandalism,
Beside the birthplace of so many dreams.
The walls of this room speak to me,
About innocence and simplicity.
I wish I could answer them.
I’ll stay longer next time,
I promise. _________________ PLEASE NOTE: I can only help one person per day

Very, very nice, Matt. So evocative. The standard of the other entries must have been very high. _________________ Peace,
